GEORGIA REGIONAL MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS!
Southwest Public Health District is looking for a few good men and women to be PUBLIC HEALTH VOLUNTEERS…..specifically MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS (MRC) VOLUNTEERS!
What is a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)?
- The mission of the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is to improve the health and safety of communities across the country by organizing and using public health, medical and other volunteers.
- It was founded after President Bush’s 2002 State of the Union Address, in which he asked all Americans to volunteer in support of their country.
- It is a partner program with Citizen Corps, a national network of volunteers dedicated to ensuring hometown security.
- Citizen Corps, along with AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the Peace Corps are all a part of the President’s USA Freedom Corps, which promotes volunteerism and service nationwide.
What is the Southwest Georgia Regional Medical Reserve Corps?
- The Southwest Georgia Regional MRC is a unit under Citizens Corps of Lee and Dougherty counties. This unit also partners with two (2) Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) in Lee & Dougherty and a Fire Corps in Lee.
- The mission of the unit is to provide volunteer support to community partners involved in both emergencies and regular, ongoing activities related to health & wellness.
- Southwest Public Health District houses the local MRC. The District’s mission is to prevent disease, injury, and disability; to promote health & well-being; and to prepare for disasters.
What kinds of activities do MRC volunteers do and how do I sign up to be a volunteer with the Southwest Georgia Regional MRC?
- Volunteers may be involved in a variety of health and preparedness related activities including, but not limited to, helping in the receipt, repackaging, transport, and/or dispensing of pharmaceutical and medical supplies/equipment from the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS); helping in shelters during natural (floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, pandemic flu, etc.) or man-made (biological/chemical weapon release, hazmat events, etc.); working at/conducting disaster recovery centers, health fairs, health promotion events, school presentations (primary/secondary, colleges/universities, etc.); disease surveillance and data collection; immunizations programs; and helping support neighbors & friends during a pandemic flu event.
- Our MRC is looking for both medical and non-medical volunteers. Persons of various skills and skill levels are needed. We STRONGLY encourage and invite persons in all disciplines to sign up.
