Message from the District Health Director:
December 2005
![]() |
Greetings and Happy Holidays Southwest Health District!
Although I prefer warm weather, December is one of my favorite months of the year. I love the holiday cheer; scurrying for the perfect gift for family and friends; the warmth of a fire on a cold winter’s night; the glamour and glitter of seasonal décor; and reflecting on the year that has past and more importantly expressing hope and eagerness for a new beginning with the start of the New Year.
As we enter the holiday season, it is my wish that you are safe, well, and at peace. And if you are not, I hope you will resolve to do the things in your power to secure your safety, make yourself as healthy as you can, and find peace. There are no greater gifts than these.
For this reason, I am requesting that you take a journey with me. It is a journey I take every New Year as I resolve to live healthier. Many of you have already begun the journey and I hope you will stay the course and provide encouragement for others. Let’s journey together, all 14 counties, and participate in the Hooked on Health campaign- a year long expedition with teammates and buddies committed to lifelong health improvement.
What is Hooked on Health? Hooked on Health is the Southwest District’s work site wellness campaign. Hooked on Health will officially kick off January 6 at the Moultrie Expo and will focus on four areas:
Surely, there is something for everyone in this campaign.
I will personally concentrate on increasing my physical activity level by striving to walk 10,000 steps daily. Realistically, will I do it? Probably not every single day, but I know that by being a part of a team of fellow steppers, I will strive to be an example for my teammates. By putting my best foot forward, I will substantially increase my physical activity. I am very competitive and I love to win- there is no way to lose when you choose to be healthier.
I will also resolve to eat at least five servings of fruits/vegetables daily and lower my stress level. I can imagine myself feeling, looking, and behaving better throughout this journey- I suspect I will never want the journey to end- and why should it?
How do you see yourself this time next year? Can you imagine yourself smoke-free if you smoke? Closer to your ideal body weight? In better physical condition? Calmer?
I see it. I believe it. I dare you to imagine the possibilities. Team up with your co-workers, neighbors, and family to commit to a New Healthier You. Become Hooked on Health. Enjoy the journey!
